The Couple by mortmere The Couple by mortmere
I had this idea a long time ago to paint John and Sherlock in the same style as David Hockney painted one famous couple [link] - well, it doesn't really resemble Hockney's style now, but this origin explains the unexpected location of their chairs and other things I've tweaked to make the setting more minimalistic.

(Now that it is finished, it somehow reminds me of an absolutely brilliant AU fanfic, "Performance in a Leading Role" by MadLori [link] in which Sherlock and John are Hollywood actors who end up playing a gay couple in a new Ang Lee movie. But maybe that's just because I know the couple in the original Hockney painting was from LA? Anyway, the fic is brilliant: go read it if you haven't yet done so - this recommendation comes from someone who usually shuns both AU fics and fics that are so long that it takes many, many evenings to read them.

This is lovely. And yeah, makes me think that maybe they're meeting with their now mutual agent to discuss how to handle upcoming interviews.

I really like this a lot. And when I clicked on the original I thought...that's Christopher Isherwood, has to be. So now two of my favorite things have collided and that's awesome. you've done a great tribute to the original piece as well

Good catch!

(Isherwood was a big fan of Sherlock Holmes stories, too.)

Yeah, I definitely intend to draw John wearing THAT shirt whenever it's plausible - it's so funny that we've seen it exactly once in the show (please correct me if I'm wrong ;) ) in the episode most people think was the worst so far, and yet it's become such a fandom icon and a character feature, comparable to the Purple Shirt of Sex... It's one of the things I love so much about this fandom, this joy over small details!

[I'd love to see the return of that shirt (as well as the cable knit sweater too) in series 3.]

So far I've only seen that shirt once so I don't think you're wrong and that's hilarious, now I can't wear purple without thinking of that and it's the best. The small details are the best...

Yeah, I read that one first (and cried more than The Reichenbach Fall ever made me cry), then was reassured enough to give a go to Performance, too (thank goodness it was of a fluffier variety :D ).

I felt the same. I didn't even cry to Richenbach. Err, i don't know why I'm telling you this, but i cried really hard....and either my parents pretended not to notice, or they didn't notice. Heh. i cant even listen to the song without freaking out.

For me, I think crying over that story was a fandom thing, since I first read it after it had become, you know, a legendary piece of angst that's supposed to make you cry torrents. Seriously, I didn't like the premise of the story and only read it out of curiosity, and yet it made me cry so much. Of course it's terribly well written and therefore terribly emotionally manipulative, but partially it must be a sort (a good sort) of mass psychosis, you know, "yay, we're all reading this and crying over it - we're connected". Nothing wrong with that of course, it's just interesting. And fun. Even crying is fun when it happens like this. Oh well, long comment, I shut up now. ;)

No, I totally love long comments. they make me feel loved- i do them all the time. <3
well, i didn't get the whole communal crying thing... but i totally bawled my eyes out when molly came in to say...goodbye. Actually, i was skeptical as to weather it would be a tearjerker. its usually really hard to cry these days. How wrong I was!

Yeah, the colours are there, more or less, and the composition, of course, I just hoped to be able to pull a more similar painting technique/lighting/contrasts, too. Not that I mind very much - these pastiches do have a life of their own and there are enough connections to the original as it is (I loved that our boys now had that fruit bowl at 221B - it reminded me of the Hockney painting and inspired me to get this finally finished).
